AI tool statistics, September 2026

Miles FosterOwner and tester, RankDude

Every month I measure 1,086 AI tool sites in 42 categories with data from DataForSEO, Google Trends, Tranco and Ahrefs. In September 2026 they got about 527 million visits from Google, with AI design tools the largest category.

Below: the categories compared, then every category with its month’s figures and links to its demand, search trends, industry report, analysis, forecast and data pages. The tools I have tested are on each category’s own page.

The AI tool categories compared, September 2026

Every category RankDude monitors, by visits from Google search to its tracked sites in September 2026. 15 of the 42 categories with a year of data grew by more than 3% and 22 shrank by more than 3%; AI phone assistants grew fastest, 2759% more than a year earlier. Categories overlap, so the sum of the rows is more than the site-wide total above.

Live monitors of the tools I test

The monthly statistics above measure markets. These four monitors measure the tools themselves, on sites I built and pay for, and refresh every day. All four, with every builder on every monitor, are on the live monitors page.

Where the numbers come from

Every figure on these pages is an estimate from a named source. Visits from Google search and search volume come from DataForSEO, popularity from the Tranco list checked against the Chrome UX Report, link strength from Ahrefs and interest over time from Google Trends via SerpApi. The same numbers are pulled for every tracked site in every category, in the same order, at the start of each month.

The tracked sites in a category are the ones that rank on Google for the category’s own search plus the most-visited sites of that kind overall. A site that cannot be measured is listed on its category page with the reason.

What each category page answers

  • Demand: is the market growing or shrinking, and who grew.
  • Search trends: five years of Google interest and searches by country.
  • Monthly analysis: what changed last month, and why.
  • Monthly forecast: expected visits for the months ahead, with ranges.
  • Industry report: every figure for the month in one citable report.
  • Data: the monthly figures as CSV files.

AI tool statistics: questions people ask

What do these AI tool statistics measure?

Visits from Google search to every tracked site, searches for each site's name, popularity by Tranco rank, link strength from Ahrefs and Google interest in each category's own search term. The same figures are pulled for every tracked tool in every category at the start of each month, after the month has closed.

How many AI tools does RankDude track?

1,086 AI tool sites across 42 categories, each counted once even when it appears in more than one category. Together they got about 527 million visits from Google in September 2026.

Are these statistics a ranking of AI tools?

No. The statistics monitor each category with measured data. RankDude ranks only the tools it has tested hands-on, and those grades live on each category's own page, not here.

How often are the statistics updated?

Once a month, after the month has closed, in every category at the same time. Each monthly edition is kept as published, apart from any correction, which is dated on the page it concerns.

Where do the figures come from?

Traffic, rankings and search volume come from DataForSEO, popularity from Tranco checked against the Chrome UX Report, link strength from Ahrefs and search interest from Google Trends via SerpApi. Each source has its own page explaining what it measures and where it falls short.
