What the memory test is

Memory is the difference between a companion and a chatbot. The test plants a made-up name together with a job, a home town and a favourite food in the first message of a conversation, buries them under many unrelated messages, and asks for the name about halfway through and for everything at the end. Each app gets three conversations with different names and facts, on different characters where the app has them.

How it works

  1. The plan's first message states the name and the three facts.
  2. The following messages are ordinary chat that never mentions any of them.
  3. About halfway through, one message asks the companion for the user's name, and a screenshot is taken.
  4. The last message asks for the name and all three facts.
  5. The replies to the two checks are read by hand and the recall is written down: the name, and how many of the three facts came back.
  6. Where the app allows it, the chat is cleared between conversations so each starts fresh; the app's own profile memory is left alone, and the review says when it carried over.

What it cannot catch

  • Grading is by hand: the replies are read and judged.
  • The check positions differ by a message or two between plans, which is why the reviews say about halfway and at the end rather than an exact number.
  • Apps with one character get three conversations with the same character instead of three characters.
