Chat timer

How long a chat reply takes is measured by the timer, not a stopwatch: as each message of the conversation plan is sent, it watches the page until the reply's first words appear and keeps the time of every reply.

What the chat timer is

A companion app lives or dies on how quickly it answers. The timer sits in the browser on the app's chat page while the conversation plan is sent one message at a time, and records two times per message: when the reply's first words appeared, and when the reply stopped changing. The chat speed grade is the median of the first figure over every reply.

How it works

  1. It opens the chat with the test account signed in, with the camera and microphone blocked so no call starts by accident.
  2. For each message of the plan it fills the box, notes the time, and presses Enter.
  3. Every few hundredths of a second it reads the conversation until the companion's messages change. That gap is the reply time.
  4. It then waits until the reply text has stopped changing for a few seconds, so a reply that arrives in pieces is counted whole, and only then sends the next message.
  5. A reply that never comes within the limit is recorded as failed, and a daily-limit message from the app stops the run rather than counting as a reply.
  6. The times of every conversation are pooled: median, fastest, slowest, the slowest one in ten, and the share under a second. Replies the app fixed in advance, such as a limit notice, are left out.

What it records

Per message
The message, the time to the first words, the time to the full reply, and the reply text.
Per run
A screenshot at the start, at the memory check and at the end, and the pooled figures.

What it cannot catch

  • It measures words appearing on the page, so a typing animation does not count as a reply, but each app needs its own page selectors.
  • A reply split into many bubbles with long gaps can be cut short by the quiet window; those messages are marked and left out of the speed figures rather than counted wrongly.
  • A planned conversation is not a live user, but every app gets the same plan, so the figures compare.
