Sparkles Review: Features, Pricing & My Test Results

Sparkles (sparkles-app.com) is an adult AI girlfriend app. You chat with a ready-made character or one you design, ask her for photos and short videos, and call her.

Most things cost Sparks, the app's credits. Premium includes 1,000 a month and free chat in the Casual mode.

It's explicit: many characters and preset video actions are sexual, and some photos come out nude without being asked.

What I think

The monthly price is fair. But extras use Sparks fast: a photo is 20, a video 100 and a call about 53 a minute. So 1,000 Sparks is about 19 minutes of calls, or 10 videos.

There's a lot to choose: 35 jobs, 33 hobbies, 47 favourite places, 11 relationships and 10 voices. But there's no box to write her backstory, and some relationships are step-family.

The result

Hana was ready in seconds, and her first message matched my brief: a photographer in a coffee shop.

A few things didn't stick. Her eyes look brown, not amber, her chat settings show a different voice from the one I picked, and her portrait has a revealing outfit I never asked for.

What could be better

A backstory box, settings that carry through, and videos of your own character. The details are in the customization test results.

What it offers

Two chat modes: Casual, free with Premium, and Immersive, which costs 2 Sparks a message. I tested Immersive.

What I found

Replies are slow: about 7 seconds each, and they arrive all at once. None of my 92 messages failed.

Memory is good, mostly. I told each character a made-up name and three things about me. After 31 messages, Nina and Liora remembered everything. Sofia had nothing: 'right now? I've got nothing.'

They stay flirty and in role, but they slip on the details. Sofia teaches samba in Rio, yet kept saying she lived in Miami. Liora, a fortune teller, gave herself a tail and a grandmother in Kyoto.

What could be better

Faster replies, and characters that stick to their own story.

What it offers

An image tool for photos of any character, and a video tool that animates a photo from a character's albums.

What I found

Hana's face stayed the same in all 20 photos, which is rare. They're sharp and realistic.

But 6 of my 10 clothed scenes came out nude: the forest hike, the café and the Tokyo street. There's no setting to turn adult content off.

The videos are smooth and sharp. Each is about 5 seconds, with no sound, and was ready in about three minutes. They did exactly what I asked, with a steady face.

One catch: you can't make videos of a character you created, because she has no albums. I used Aurora, a ready-made character.

What could be better

Clothes when you ask for clothes, and videos of your own character.

What it offers

Call any character from the chat. Calls cost about 53 Sparks a minute, and replies in chat can also be read out loud.

What I found

I called Hana, Nina and Liora and asked each the same 15 questions. They started answering in about 3.3 seconds.

The voices sound natural: clear, lively and quick. Listen for yourself:

Two slips: Hana sometimes reads her stage directions out loud ('whispers asterisk'), and she gave me a name I'd never told her on the call.

What could be better

Faster answers, and no stage directions read aloud.

There are 48 ready-made characters, 31 realistic and the rest anime, all made by Sparkles. Each has a story, photo albums and relationship levels.

That's a small library, and many stories are taboo or family set-ups, like a step-sister or a best friend's mom.

• Relationship levels: you earn points as you chat, with small Spark rewards.
• Private galleries: 23 photo sets, 280 to 360 Sparks each.
• Shorties: a feed of short adult teaser clips.
• Voice in chat: replies can be read out loud automatically.

Sparkles shines when you build your own partner: the creator is detailed, and the photos keep her face.

It's held back by slow replies, a small library and an image tool that often ignores a request for clothes.
