Website builder uptime tests

For every website builder I review, I build real sites on it and my own monitor opens them every 5 minutes for 30 days. It shows whether the builder's hosting keeps your site online.

Each test runs for 30 days from the day the sites go live. Figures fill in as it runs.

How the uptime test works

During a review I build three sites on the builder from the same briefs every builder gets: a shop, a café and a photographer. For 30 days, every 5 minutes, our monitor opens each one the way a browser does and records whether it answered and how long the server took. The sites are hosted by the builder (a site on our own domain just points to its servers), so this is exactly what the builder’s customers get.

It runs from one fixed location, so response times compare fairly between builders. If our own connection drops, that round is thrown out instead of counted against anyone.

The code and the data are ours. No outside status service is used, and no brand can change its figures.

What counts as down

The uptime grade in reviews

Each review shows the builder's uptime test, graded over its 30 days. The grade updates by itself while the test runs and is frozen when it ends:

Questions

Why test sites I built instead of the builder's homepage?
Because your site is what matters. A builder's own homepage can stay up while the servers that host its customers' sites fail. Sites built on the builder show what you would actually get.
What counts as down?
A page that doesn't answer within 20 seconds, answers with a server error (5xx), or says the page is gone (404). Every failure is checked again 15 seconds later before it counts, so a single dropped connection is not an outage.
Why is a builder missing?
A builder appears once I have bought a plan, built my test sites on it and published its review.
Does a brand pay to be here, or know it is checked?
No. Every builder is tested the same way on sites I built and paid for, and none of them can change the figures.
