Reply timer

A receptionist that pauses for three seconds after everything you say feels like a machine. The timer measures that pause on every turn of every call: from the end of the caller's line to the first sound from the receptionist.

What the reply timer is

The pick-up grade in a receptionist review is the median of these gaps over every graded turn, with the slowest one in ten and the longest wait beside it, and the time from dialling to the greeting kept separately.

How it works

  1. A sound meter in the call page watches the receptionist's side of the line and timestamps the first sound above a quiet threshold after each caller line.
  2. The gap for the turn is that time minus the end of the caller's line.
  3. The time from pressing call to the first sound is the pick-up time, ringing included on a real line.
  4. After the calls, every graded turn is pooled: the number of replies, the median, the slowest one in ten and the longest, and the shortest, longest and mean greeting time. Turns with dead air or a one-word acknowledgement are left out.

What it records

Per turn
The reply gap in milliseconds.
Per review
Replies measured, median, slowest one in ten, longest wait, and the greeting times.

What it cannot catch

  • The clock stops at the first sound, which can be a thinking tone or a typing noise rather than a voice; where that mattered the review gives both the time to the first sound and the time to the voice.
  • The greeting time on a real phone line includes the ringing.

Where it was used

Every published review that ran this checker, with the figure it produced there, read from the review’s own data. Each figure opens the test results behind it.
