Fact check
Every website builder gets the same three briefs, a café, a photographer and a shop, with twenty facts each. The fact check reads every page of the three live sites, marks each fact right, missing or wrong, and lists the testimonials, awards and figures the builder made up.
- When it runs
- After the first draft of each site
- Used in
- 4 reviews
- Runs on
- My PC reading every page, then my eyes
What the fact check is
A builder that invents a five-star review or a founding year has written something false on a customer's site. The script collects every page of a site, saves its text and a full-page screenshot, and matches each fact's wording. Then every page is read, because matching finds a phrase but cannot tell a wrong delivery time from a right one.
How it works
- It collects the site's pages from its sitemap and the links on the home page, up to a limit.
- It loads each page in a browser, takes a full-page screenshot and saves the text, the title and the social links.
- Each fact is marked found when any of its wordings appears on any page.
- It flags likely inventions: testimonials, reviews and stars, awards and press, placeholder text, claims of years in business or customers served, and social networks the brief never named.
- Every page is then read and each fact marked right, missing or wrong, and the inventions confirmed or struck.
What it records
- Per site
- The pages read with their screenshots and text, each fact's result, the flagged inventions, and the social links found.
What it cannot catch
- Matching finds wording; the right, missing and wrong verdicts are made by reading.
- A few facts have no fixed wording and are checked by hand only.
- Sites beyond the page limit are read in part, and the review says so.
Where it was used
Every published review that ran this checker, with the figure it produced there, read from the review’s own data. Each figure opens the test results behind it.
